Today will hopefully be another of those days that my descendants will ask me about, with a look on their face like “seriously? it was seriously like that back then?”

I’m referring to President Obama’s public announcement of his intention to end the policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ For those who don’t know, this is a policy that Bill Clinton enacted that says that members of the US Armed Forces are not allowed to openly serve as homosexuals, and also that no one in the armed forces is allowed to ask whether or not someone is homosexual. Now, i must state for the record, that several years ago, upon hearing about this policy for the first time, i actually thought it sounded like a good idea. I mean, the armed forces should be about being armed, and being forceful. It should not be about whether you are straight, gay, christian, atheist, a football fan or a rugby fan. I thought that it was a smart policy, because in theory, it meant that the armed forces was not interested in anything by your ability to perform the duties assigned to you. Unfortunately, just like many good theories, it was terrible in practice. What it ended up doing, is causing homosexuals to be targeted, hazed, silent, and more than anything, act as if they were straight. What it turned out to be, was a policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Just Act Like You’re Straight.” What’s most annoying and disappointing about this policy, is that other countries who allow their military to serve openly, have actually shown increases in morale, and in performance. My guess, is that people who are allowed to be themselves, whoever they are, perform better, and are accepted more than if they are acting. So, today is a good day, because President Obama tweeted his intention, and the joint chief’s support of this repeal.

Tonight marks the return of, but also the last season of Lost.

LOST

Melody and I really didnt get into the first two seasons, and didn’t really even watch them on television. What happened, is that our friend Thomas ended up getting the first two seasons in full, and loaning them to us. We watched them almost straight through (about 30 hours of episodes) over the course of 1.5 weekends. That was several years ago. Now, we watch Lost when it comes on TV each week, and we have done for the past few years. Now they are in the final season, and we’re both happy and sad that it’s ending. Happy because we’re going to find out the truths and mysteries from the show (ahhh…the Polar Bear on a Tropical Island feels so simple now), but sad because we really like the show, and hate it when our favorite shows end.

I don’t think i’ll post my thoughts about the episode tonight (i haven’t watched it yet), because i know that some people save the shows up to watch later, and i hate it when people unexpectedly post spoilers. So, instead i thought i’d give a list of my (and Melody’s) favorite shows that have been cancelled before their time…..*sigh* *sniff*
